MAIREAD MCGUINNESS MEP TO ADDRESS LONDON CONFERENCE ON CHILD PROTECTION – MONDAY

Mairéad McGuinness, Ireland East Fine Gael MEP will deliver the keynote address at a special conference to be held in London on Monday 3rd October on child protection in a global context, particularly children living in institutions. The conference is being organised by the Oak Foundation.

In her address the MEP, a member of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on Disability, will tell her audience that while physical barriers to inclusiveness are, by and large, disappearing and accessibility is now a standard part of the planning process in most European countries, the far more difficult barriers are attitudinal.

She will stress the need for scientific research, good convincing evidence that educating in institutions is neither good for children nor financially sound. And she will encourage the activists to facilitate the sharing of evidence-based best practice.

McGuinness will also address the issue of the challenge of translating the fine theory of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and other best practice standards into reality.

TIME: 13.45
